What belt rank is acquired after the degree black belt of 10 or higher equivalent? In most schools or arts classification starts with white, then yellow and then moves from there to green, blue, red, brown and black. With black, it varries somewhat, but in most cases, there is a ten degrees of black, the instructor Grand Master or grade 10. I read that some masters have successfully superceeding their position by re-aquiring the rank of white belt. Please explain in detail.
Hi there
This reality, it depends on the organization and style. If you talk specifically Japanese arts, so none of them really have a degree at all! You modern judo to blame for the belt system, I fear. After you have 10th Dan Soke or the role of the great master. But it can also be a misleading title that Soke did not understand art at all. It may be the guardian of Densho or holder of the name etc. This applies to all the arts of Japan, Koryu Budo no modern which is what most styles of karate and belong jujustu . You also Mikyo Kaiden teacher or master of a ryu. This is a license that is given to someone who has mastered all the techniques of the ryu. The only thing to note here is that they have mastered the techniques of writing not art or the feeling of art! Other organizations have different levels or stages of 10th dan. Some people will see these figures as 11, within 12 and 13, etc., but they are not! They are not that high honor. So everything really depends on the organization and major players such as kobudo association ippon etc. It is a common misconception that you go full circle. You do not! What happens is you go straight to the beginning, unless you consider now the same thing with different eyes! Its all about the show for what it really is and how its changing?
Best wishes

I disagree with some of Idai say a Soke. In my studies of Soke should be the best person in both learning and the ability to make art. There may be some who have been more training, but the Soke should never be just a figurehead. In America, it is another thing ... Flag
I know some people who are in such systems and is viewed as a return to the starting point but I personally do not agree with it. Why not wear a black belt, but anyway? It is all ego based and are not we, the martial arts should be ignorant of the things that are on me? My sensei always told me nothing more than 5th Dan (Godan) is an honorific anyway it really means nothing more than the person was in the arts has long been devoted to their training, helping others people have improved their Ryu and still trains ... at least that's my opinion.
red belt in BJJ.
I agree with what most nwohioguy said. In the 1960s, it was rare to ever hear of anyone above 5th dan. There were some, but it was not as common as it is today. I also learned from several of my instructors who ranks above 5th dan is honorary degrees. There are only two cases I know of any class above 10th dan. I think both are a bunch of BS and I will not comment further on them. Traditionally, a Japanese art of Okinawa or the head of a style (Soke) is considered over the ranking system. History teaches us that the Soke can be any rank from 5th to 10th dan. It is not automatically a 10th dan many people assume. BUT, whatever his present rank is, it is still considered beyond the grading system. At the head of the style, he may issue a rank one. This means that it can actually deliver a rank higher than someone who is his rank. It a.
