Birmingham Martial Arts Centre

Besides the well-known sports teams that play in the city, there are few cities in Europe can claim to have hosted such a variety of European leagues and international sport that can Birmingham. Showjumping table tennis and badminton for motor racing, Birmingham was the host of recent years.

One of the main reasons so many championship events to be held in Birmingham is the presence of the National Indoor Arena (NIA) King Edwards Road, behind the International Convention Centre. It is used to host a wide variety of championship events, including martial arts, athletics, trampolining and Davis Cup tennis to name a few. The NIA is part of NEC, the National Exhibition Centre. The NEC is owned by the city of Birmingham, but is actually located in Solihull, east of the city. The NEC Arena is now the home of the Horse of the Year shows.

Birmingham has two football teams playing in the Championship English League football. Officials of both clubs is Aston Villa FC, known locally as "The Villa". Their ground "Villa Park is a suburb of Aston and has been regularly used for the FA Cup semi-final. Formed in 1874 from a cricket club in pursuit of" ... something to do during the winter months, they are one of the twelve founding members of the Football League in 1888. Villa is one of only three English clubs to win the European Cup in 1982, beating Bayern Munich 1-0. Since then, apart from winning the League Cup a couple of times, they failed to win any major trophies but remain one of the countries best known clubs. Many famous players have played and managed Aston Villa, but the name of Peter Hart is probably the most memorable for scoring the winning goal in the European Cup, and 90 total goals in 232 games prolific.

Birmingham City FC, also known as 'The Blues', playing at St Andrews in Small Heath. Formed in 1875, it was in 1945 they became Birmingham City FC, having started to play under the name of Small Heath Alliance. Despite having never won a major trophy, the Blues have a consistent and loyal fans. Technically just outside the city limits is at West Bromwich Albion FC. Despite the fact that their land, hawthorn - which is the highest in the country at 168 meters altitude, is in fact a few yards inside of Sandwell, they still have many followers who reside in Birmingham.

The Edgbaston Cricket Ground is the home of Warwickshire County Cricket Club, one of the best teams in the country. With historical associations dating to the 1820s, the first cricket club Warwickshire we would recognize today, was created in 1882. The bear, as they are called locally, are regular winners of the trophies and had a lot of famous players in their team, such as: Eric Hollis, Dennis Amiss and Brian Lara. With one of the best grounds in Edgbaston country was used as one of the elite places to test international cricket matches since 1902. About 1 km from the cricket ground is the Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club. It is home to the DFS Classic, which is played here every year and is one of the few international events tennis rankings in the United Kingdom which is played outside London.

Alexander Perry Barr Stadium is home to Birchfield Harriers AC. The athletics club has been in existence since 1879 and now enjoys considerable success, members of the current team has great athletes such as Denise Lewis, Kelly Southerton and Glen Smith. Team include alumina, Ainsley Bennett, Derek Redmond and Geoff Capes. Their home ground, The Alexander is one of the places of the premier athletics in the country, hosting national and international competitions and championships.
