Expanded Meeting www.SCIENTIFICWRESTLING.com Robinson article by Mr. Gong Magazine recently asked me to write an article for the Japanese MMA scene on the recent scientific clinical starring UWF Wrestling coach Mr Billy Robinson. As readers of this blog will recognize, I'm only details on the blog is here before.
Anyway, I thought to put in place for English readers here. Enjoy!
In my role as "Johnny Appleseed" Catch Wrestling by the United States, I had the chance to choose directly the brain of Karl Gotch, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Dick Cardinal, Billy Wicks, Frank Cain, Josh Barnett and dozens of others. On the morning of March 28, 2007, I went to LAX and picked up one of the greatest masters Catch Wrestling in modern times, Billy Robinson! As Karl Gotch, Robinson has taught at the Snake Pit in Wigan, England and has a reputation as one of the most renowned teachers of the world's catch as catch can wrestling. Bill is 12 years younger than Karl and despite having bad knees, he is always eager to learn. More recently has been teaching the craft of Mr. Miyato UWF-Snakepit Japan. Before the Bill was the coach grab the UWFi, where he coached perhaps his most successful pupil, Kazushi Sakuraba.
My first day with Mr. Robinson was truly a ton of fun. After spending the day with Bill talking about the struggle, history, and so we arrived at the control room and put on our wrestling shoes around 6:30 pm. We had about 10 people present and Billy ran us through conditioning exercises such as squats, Hindu, bar muscle-ups, pull (aka grinding), and more. It was a very special clinic since attendance has been stand-out MMA Josh Barnett and his trainer (and a champion of Shooto light heavyweight), Erik Paulson's CSW. We then began working on a variety of takedowns I've never seen anywhere. Those takedowns were very effective, and most of them very painful.
The bill, then we had a circle around and shared history and philosophy of catch-as-catch-can. Again more things that I had never seen anywhere before. Mr. Robinson has a very interesting perspective on the evolution of mixed martial arts that is rarely heard in the United States. He talked about his time in his youth to fight Snake Pit in Wigan, his grandfather boxing champion with his bare hands, the history of Catch Wrestling, the true meaning of Lancashire the term "catch-as-catch-can "and even the exploits of King Henry VIII's struggle in England (those who are fans of the Showtime series The Tudors is particularly appreciate this).
Then we worked on a variety of presentations (Hammerlock, double wrist lock entries, etc.). The clinic was only up to 22 hours but we went up nearly 11 Billy share with us. Then we went to the pub for beers (until about 1am).
During the second evening of the visit of Mr. Robinson, we had several Japanese participants, including some excellent athletes Megumi Fujii and Hiroyuki Abe. Billy covered more maneuvers that have very rarely been seen. There was a romance against the double wrist lock that I imagine both Royler and Renzo Gracie wanted, they would have known before facing Kazushi Sakuraba.
After the evening of the fight lessons, we all headed to Jerry's Famous Deli in Marina Del Ray for some great food, drink, and conversation. Josh Barnett has talked a little about his views on current issues mixed martial arts given the purchase of Pride FC by the Fertitta brothers and his invitation to a party at the Playboy Mansion. It was a great day.
everyone showed Saturday morning for a full day of teaching, from 9am. Billy has done some conditioning exercises and the light began to fight on the concept of "walks". He really felt that most modern grapplers did not understand if "pro" way to ride during a game of catch. Billy we crossed the plate of the motorcycle, the SI.
