Ikon Martial ArtsTourist information on Wakefield
The Wakefield borough comprises more than forty towns and villages, including forests and countryside, and principle city has a population of nearly 80,000 people.

The history of the town since the Middle Ages, and much time and care has been devoted to the preservation and excavation of archaeological treasures of the city. But the numerous museums, heritage centers and historic sites do not affect the bustle of the city, the modern atmosphere.

The vibrant nightlife, cultural facilities and quality restaurants make the town a popular place to visit, and plans of £ 100 million regeneration are sure to continue to increase tourism in the region.

History

Wakefield has existed since medieval times, and taken to the industrial importance of the cloth industry contractor. Coal mining provided many jobs in the region, and Wakefield was hit hard by the closure of wells during the mid-century to the late twentieth.

Caphouse coal mine, the oldest working mine in the country, has since been converted into National Coal Mining Museum, providing guided tours several times a day, exhibitions and educational activities.

Sandal Castle, immortalized by the rhyme "The Grand Old Duke of York, is the ruin of the castle where the Duke of York was defeated in the War of the Roses, and is open to the public today.

Galleries

The Wakefield Art Gallery houses an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures, dating from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. local sculptors, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, are well reflected in the collections of the gallery. The gallery is located near the city center and located in a town house of the nineteenth century.

The Hepworth Gallery will replace this in 2008, as we believe the Wakefield Art Gallery is not able to display the works to their best advantage.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is located at 200 years, landscaped gardens, and consists of four exhibition spaces, featuring a variety of sculptures and art installations.

Theaters

Wakefield Theatre Royal and Opera House comprises three levels and seating for 500 people. The building is Grade II listed Victorian and retains much of its original dramatic atmosphere and acoustics. The theater is an incredible success, with an annual turnover of £ 1 million, and has a busy schedule of dramas, comedies, musicals and conferences. Like many theaters, its most popular production is the annual Christmas pantomime.

The Wakefield cycle is the execution of 32 plays, based on the Bible and folk stories in various parts of the city of more than 32 days. The "cycle" is a former British tradition, but Wakefield is one of four others. No date has yet been set for 2007.

The Stagecoach Theatre School performance arts twice a year.
