If you do not attack one of these basic weaknesses that all human beings share, you do not attack effectively, period.
The best places to attack depends on many factors such as instant positioning and balance, but there are some things to keep constantly in mind. If your attacker has a weapon, attacking his wrist (to disarm) or legs (the trip itself). If your attacker looks like he wants to catch you, attack his eyes - blinded while grappling is much more difficult than it seems.
