What are the laws and regulations to have a tournament Mixed Martial Arts? I am willing to host a mixed martial arts tournament soon and I want to know if there is anything legally that I'm wise do or watch. As if I'm having a real gym or can be in someones backyard. I expect it to be a great event, so help me here.
I have no idea, man. At a minimum you need the support of an agency sanction, an athletic commission or the Boxing Commission.
No offense, but if you need to ask, you are far from ready to put on a show.
Since this is your first event, I seriously suggest you not make a big party. I would also suggest you speak with the multitude of other tournaments like MMA and ask them specific questions about the organization. and when I say ask many events like MMA, I mean to ask you who organized these events for years, not an idiot who had the same idea as you on a whim. Then find an event that you believe to be well organized and looks like they covered all their bases, and ask the host of this. This will include the necessary legal permits, suggested sites to host the tournament, the possible need for an insurance policy for your event, if the registration can be done at the door or not, and exemptions participants. It could also point you in the direction of certified referees who can keep the situation under control, if it does get out of hand, as opposed to a group of friends who have no experience in stopping a situation where tempers flair up or can even recognize when the situation becomes uncontrollable. (They smell old point in regular tournaments, karate and soccer events, so do not think it will not happen in full contact No Holds Barred MMA event).
One thing is sure, you can not put up flyers, people wait to show everything and smooth. You'll need some time to properly organize this, I also suggest you do not make it "soon".
I guess you can forget the insurance and everything as long as you have a very specific contract signed and sealed by each person in the competition, stating that you take absolutely no responsibility for injury or death and that each combatant compete with his / her own risk + or any other legally you can find. It should probably also specify the conditions of the contest and rules. Basically just make sure you're protected against any liability. Maybe you should also ad that you reserve the right to make changes to the contract at any time without warning and that sort of thing. Make sure the spectators are well behind the fight and have no chance of being injured. If it will really be a great event with people you can not say that you trust 100% to be cool about things, I really really want a lawyer, someone who knows the law for real. Make sure you have a place to do it either with someone else around to complain or have the full consent of your neighbors, a new contract would be a good thing. Anyway have fun if you remove it.
I am not providing legal advice.
However, Martial arts organizations put on tournaments all the time without "accreditation bodies", "certified refs, and as others have mentioned.
You'll probably want to have insurance in case of injury or a lawsuit. But there is nothing wrong with a martial arts organization hosts an amateur tournament and I've never heard of him imposing the special or special judges / ref.
Consult your own state laws on the subject. Many states treat boxing, MMA and now, as a source of tax revenue. The big problem for them is to ensure that you pay for all licenses, taxes on income, etc. Honestly, most often do not care as long as they get their cut of any measures they see themselves password.
