What colors can be used hakama for kendo equipment? Hello. I started kendo training one month ago and my teacher told me that I can now buy a keiko-gi and a pair of hakamas. the keiko-gi, I chose white, and I thought buying a pair of red hakama, but I never saw anyone in the videos of kendo, or in my class with red hakama. why is it?
I agree with the other answerer above that you should ask your Lord, that different dojo have different rules.
But traditionally, white is reserved for children either, or women. The top white gi is less a problem, but your main goal is not to hold out, then go for what the majority of your dojo door. white bogu and hakama, however, are normally the same point. Black keiko-gi is also usually an option for advanced kendoka. Red traditionally means the color of a woman, then bogu with red stitching and red gi is more for women.
To be sure, I would go to indigo. When you start going to tournaments, it's a better idea of blending in. If all the mistakes you make will be magnified and remembered. You can even be considered arrogant to wear something so flashy when you started.
you should ask your teacher what colors are acceptable to his dojo, some of us are very picky about it. others may not care.
I would go with black, which is almost always acceptable
red hakama are usually worn by young girls Japanese shrine, so I guess red hakama are usually reserved for them. Kendoka hakama are usually dark blue, black or white.
As someone said, red hakama are not used in kendo, but for formal wear in the temples by others. In kendo, the Japanese have traditionally taught, it would be indigo blue. black hakama are usually worn by aikido practitioners while you find some Japanese wear white gi and hakama, there are more players than the Korean Kumdo wear white.
As a traditionalist in some respects, I prefer indigo complete for both keikogi and hakama
I suggest you look http://ebogu.com/ and see hakamas and GI's they offer. its very fast shipping and excellent quality.
since you are a beginner, you should try to wear the color indigo hakama and gi, but check with your sensei what color you should buy because it really is him who decides what is in his dojo.
also because you are a beginner, you can wear a black hakama, but most are not hakamas black cotton, they are Tetron blend (polyester and rayon). The difference between cotton and polyester is really the folds, creases hakama. in 100 percent cotton, they do not sow, so you must fold your hakama or he will lose the pleats. You also wash specially.
Tetron mixing eliminates the problem of wrinkles by stitching them in a way that you lose face, even if you do not throw in the wash! so you dont have to worry about losing his hakama folds. Tetron and resembles a regular hakama, but you can tell the difference if you examine them.
For me, I had a cotton 5000 (5000 signifies the quality of cotton. more one climbs, the better the quality. but for starters, 5000 is what you should get. hhigher nothing and you'll look like point, and if you're not then you just look arrogant.) and it works very well. its lasted me a year and no problems. Bending is a pain, and washing, it is a ritual in itself, but I love it. if I decided to buy a Tetron because they are a little easyer to take care of, but for tournaments and others, you should have a cotton. but since you arent bogu yet, you still have five months at least to worry about it. So, all you get is great, but I suggest the Tetron all simply because it is easier to take care of.
